History of Château Comtal
The Château Comtal was built by the Counts of Trencavel in the 12th century to consolidate their rule over the region. The castle was a strategic base in the defence of the Cité de Carcassonne and played a crucial role during the Albigensian Crusades in the early 13th century. After its conquest by French troops, it was further expanded and served as a military fortress.
In the 19th century, Château Comtal was extensively restored under the direction of the famous architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. His work gave the castle its present appearance, with its striking towers, battlements and stone facades. Today it is considered one of the most important examples of medieval military architecture in Europe.🏰
